I am Fee-Only

I do not accept commission, referral fees, or compensation of any kind based on selling financial products, without exception.

I am a Fiduciary

I will put your best interests first, and fully disclose and manage unavoidable conflicts fairly in your favor, at all times.

Things to Know

  • I am based in New York’s Hudson Valley and serve clients across the country.

  • I focus on investment consulting, tax and cash flow planning, retirement planning and major life event changes (such as inheritance, career planning and estate planning).

  • My service is “flat fee” and not tied to the value of your assets. Fees are based on planning complexity.

  • I also offer “hourly planning” which is more conversational and strategic, rather than based on analysis of your financial picture.

  • I also provide finance and investment advice for non-profit organizations.

Are you a fiduciary?

Many advisors refer to themselves as a fiduciary, but many really are not. Huguenot Financial Planning is a fiduciary in the truest sense of the word, as all advice is without any conflicts of interest, only what is best for the client. We do not charge asset management fees as that would create risks that we are not giving truly fiduciary-focused advice.

Do I need to have a lot of assets to work with you?

My firm works with clients from all financial backgrounds and does not require a client to have a minimum base of assets or net worth. That said, my fees are in the middle of the industry average, and may be higher than some people can afford.

What is your investment philosophy?
We tailor our investment advice to a client’s particular comfort zone and long-term goals. Accounts that will be relied on for short-term funding needs in life will always have a very conservative orientation, while accounts that are focused on the longer-term (such as retirement plans or funds that won’t likely be needed for at least 6-7 years) have a greater orientation towards growth potential. Investment costs have a big impact on returns, so we always focus on low-cost and diversified exchange-traded funds (ETFs)

Do you sell financial products such as insurance policies, annuities or other Wall Street products?
We do not sell any products, only our time. We do provide a deep analysis of clients’ existing financial policies/products and help clients understand when such products can be helpful and which ones represent the greatest value.

Is there anything else you can tell me about you?
I have been helping clients with important financial decisions and choices for three decades, always with the highest standards of integrity. I am proud of my spotless track record, in an industry where many people choose not to put their clients’ needs first.

FAQ with David Sterman

  • What does being a “fiduciary” mean?
  • How do Huguenot Financial Planning members charge for periodic financial advice?
  • Once my financial plan or project is finished, will our relationship end?

A fiduciary is a person or institution given the power to act on behalf of another in situations that require great trust, honesty and loyalty. Fiduciaries are hired to act in your best interest and must set aside personal motives and conflicts of interest in favor of pursuing the best outcome for your unique situation.

Huguenot Financial Planning proudly embraces our fiduciary duty. Investment professionals who aren't fiduciaries are often held to a lesser standard, the so-called sustainability standard. This standard means that the products they sell you just have to be suitable for you, not necessarily ideal or in your best interest.

In many cases, our clients did not know that an advisor that they have worked with in the past was actually a broker who is a registered representative on behalf of a brokerage or insurance company. They were not provided with details on how much commission the representative would receive on the recommendations or if there were commission-free alternatives.

The issue is that while many advisors appear to be independent and the same to the general public, only independent fee-only advisors like Huguenot Financial Planning are legally required to act as fiduciaries to their clients. This means that the clients' interests have to be put first and the only compensation to the advisor comes directly from the client, not from hidden commissions or kickbacks from the mutual funds or insurance products they recommend.
