Blake Jones was interviewed by FeeOnlyNetwork on 11/07/2023

What makes you or your firm particularly qualified to serve working families who are thinking about taking out their 401(k)/IRA?

I have prepared hundreds of tax returns, many where people took out their 401(k)/IRA early. I know the exceptions to the 10% penalty and I know alternative ways to achieve your goals whether it's pay off debt, pay for a vacation, change your investments, or make a large purchase. I have applied many of these strategies in my own financial life as well.

Most financial planners are looking for people who are wealthy with large 401(k)'s/IRAs. I focus on those who may feel stuck financially and are looking for a way to get ahead.

What is the biggest misconception about your job?

People often think financial advisors just help those who are wealthy and nearing retirement with their investments (with good reason). However, there are many financial planners, myself included, that help working families in their 30s and 40s. We look at everything financial such as the type of debt you have, credit score, wills and trusts, insurance policies, employer benefits, investment accounts, and more. There are many small and important recommendations we provide to save you money and boost your financial life.

A stranger at a party asks you what you do. How do you answer?

I find ways to help people lower the interest on their debt, invest appropriately, lower their taxes, and boost their financial confidence. I do this by meeting with them often and reviewing everything that impacts their financial life.

What do you wish more people knew about the process of creating a financial plan?

I make it laid back and easier to talk about your finances. I help you implement the recommendations in our meeting. There's no judgment or pressure. There is a central focus on what's best for you.

I don't create big plans with a bunch of pages to go over in a two hour meeting. I prefer bite size pieces of recommendations. For example, tax planning is often a good place to start because we can take one action that can help reduce taxes and also help with saving for your goals. The process involves regular meetings every month with recommendations that are implemented immediately so you can feel and see instant progress in your financial life.

What do you think is the biggest mistake people make with their money?

I think it comes down to patience. Patience to check the math, to wait out a down market, to explore alternative options, to make a purchase, or to become more educated on a topic and do your due diligence.

Often by waiting a couple of days then you give yourself time to think, question, and review a potential decision.

We can all think of mistakes we made financially in the past because all of us have made them! Typically if we would have waited and educated ourselves more then we would have made a better decision. Patience has to be infused with the education and not just waiting. Purchasing a car is a common example. It's typically the second largest purchase we make yet sometimes we'll go into a dealership and leave with a car hours later without having done any due diligence.

Tell me about a unique client situation where your experience and expertise added significant value to the relationship.

  • A client was facing a $1,400 health insurance repayment penalty on their tax return. The client had no job and no savings. I came up with a way to reduce their penalty into a refund on their tax return by having them contribute to a Traditional IRA. Since they had no savings I had them do a cash advance on their credit card to contribute to the Traditional IRA for the previous year. Then a few days later they were able to withdraw the Traditional IRA for the current year. They only had to pay about $10 of credit card interest while now getting a refund on their tax return instead of owing $1,400.
  • I helped a client with their tax return receive a bigger refund than the IRA contribution I recommended. By contributing around $200 to a Traditional IRA for the previous year they were able to receive the Retirement Savings Credit on their tax return which increased their refund by more than $200!
  • A client had a significant amount of funds in the stock market. Initially, the client was not going to use those funds for at least 3 or more years, but once the client's plans changed then I recommended changing the investment to cash. The client ended up using the funds six months later. The stock market in those six months dropped around 17% in that time period. Fortunately, by being proactive we were able to avoid that.

I focus on financial flexibility because plans do change, often. Our 3-year or 5-year plans often turn out very differently than we planned so financial flexibility is crucial to adjust as life changes. Our philosophy at Pomegranate Financial is financial flexibility so that we can adjust smoothly to our constantly changing lives.
